Overview

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held in honor of legendary Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer Eddie Aikau, is one of the most prestigious and rare surf competitions in the world. Only run when Waimea Bay sees waves over 20 feet Hawaiian scale (40-foot faces), the event embodies courage, respect, and the spirit of aloha.

Highlights

🌊 Nature as the Gatekeeper – The competition window runs through the winter, but the call is only made when the waves are truly massive—making “The Eddie” as unpredictable as it is iconic.

🏄 Elite Invite-Only Field – Just 40 of the world’s top big wave surfers, including Hawaiʻi’s best, are invited to compete, reflecting both skill and cultural respect.

🌟 Heritage & Legacy – The event honors Eddie Aikau’s legacy as a pioneering lifeguard and waterman who embodied bravery, community, and Hawaiian values.

🌍 Global Surf Culture – From Hawaiʻi to Portugal to Brazil, the world’s surf community watches Waimea for the moment “The Eddie is on.”

🤝 Sponsors & Cultural Activations – While deeply rooted in Hawaiian tradition, the event also features sponsor activations, surf lifestyle branding, and global media coverage, balancing authenticity with reach.
